Field Filling Up for Classic By: Addison Penfield 4/23/09
ASHEBORO—Three-quarters of the field in the Add Penfield/RCS Golf Classic is in place, Available slots are getting fewer and fewer for the 17th renewal of the annual golf fundraiser for Regional Consolidated Services (RCS), a private, non profit human service agency with headquarters in Asheboro.
The 18-hole, captain’s choice tournament will be played Friday, May 15, at the Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro. The number of entries is limited to 124 golfers, men and/or women. Pinewood’s highly-rated par-72 course will be the tournament site for the first time in the history of the event. A spring feature on the area’s sports calendar.
For a tenth year, the Acme-McCrary/Sapona Foundation functions as corporate sponsor of the tournament.
Several well-known figures associated with North Carolina sports are entered. These include Woody Durham of Chapel Hill, the play-by-play radio voice of the UNC national championship basketball team, and Bob Harris of Durham who is play-by-play football and basketball announcer for the Duke Sports Network. Both broadcasters are members of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Irwin Smallwood. retired executive sports editor of the Greensboro News and Record and a nationally-known golfwriter, is also a Hall of Famer and is committed to play, as is Nat Walker of Greensboro, the newly-elected president of the state’s Sports Hall of Fame.
The tournament is a designated part of the observance of the 30th anniversary of Regional Consolidated Services. Corporate sponsor Acme-McCrary also has cause to celebrate. The Corporation turned 100 years old this year.
The entry fee for the individual player is $75; foursomes are charged $300. Greens fees and golf cart, lunch, a favors packet and prizes to the winners of special events are covered .
