Mt. Gilead Woman Earns Excellence Award By: Addison Penfield
ASHEBORO— A Mt. Gilead high school drop-out has been honored with an Award of Excellence from the Pee Dee Region Workforce Development Board (WDB) which functions in coordination with Regional Consolidated Services (RCS) of Asheboro.
Tracy Haywood , who left school in the 10th grade, was recognized for her successful pursuit of employment goals at the Pee Dee Region’s sixth annual Awards Banquet June 14 at the Day’s Inn in Southern Pines. Haywood received the youth award, having excelled in the Building Futures Youth Program offered by RCS under provisions of the national Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
Haywood quit school largely because of a difficult family environment, but persevered to acquire high school equivalency in the Alternative Secondary Education Program. Building on that foundation, she became what was described as a “consistent participant” in Building Futures.
All this led to enrollment in the Criminal Justice Technology curriculum at Montgomery Community College. Haywood is in her second year of her studies there and has her sights set on becoming a Probation Surveillance officer. |
