RCS GOLF CLASSIC RESULTS By: Add Penfield 5/16/09
ASHEBORO-Insurance executive Frank Hill of Kernersville captained a team of out of-town golfers and paced his teammates to victory in the Add Penfield/RCS Golf Classic last Friday (May 15) at the Pinewood Country Club. Putting together a spectacular round of 18- under- par over Pinewood's par-72 layout, the winning foursome posted a 54 in the captain's choice event, played for the 17th time as a fundraiser for Regional Consolidated Services (RCS). Rounding out the championship group were the captain's son, Jonathan Hill of Winston-Salem, Tony Collins of Greensboro and Terry Novak of Raleigh. The runners-up in a field of 116 golfers were Bob Wood, Garland Yates, Michael Cross and Chris Tamplin. They were two shots back at 56, 16 under par. Third-place was decided in a 12-hole scorecard play-off. The team of Bill Redding, Duffy Johnson, John Toledano Jr., and John Frazier claimed third place, firing a 58. Kevin Connolly, one of the guest notables playing in the tournament for the first time, won the putting contest and took home a folding golf chair donated by Randolph Bank and Trust Company. Connolly is a sports anchor for Fox 8 News...WGHP-TV in High Point. In other special events, Jo Ellen Rappold, wife of Walt Rappold who was an outstanding back on the Cotton Bowl championship team at Duke University in 1961, won the ladies prize for longest drive on the 9th hole. Her husband played in the same group, along with Cotton Bowl teammates, Dick (Rhino) Havens and Jim Licardo. Ryan Patton had the longest drive for men on Hole No.10. Mike Smith put his tee shot closest to the pin on the par-3 17th hole to win a handsome recliner donated by Klaussner Furniture Industries, Inc. At a luncheon before the day's play, Regional Consolidated Services presented its annual award for "Service to Golf and this Tournament" to Leo Derrick, Jr., of Asheboro, saluting him as a fine ambassador for the game and expressing appreciation for his generous support of the agency's golf event. This year's tournament was staged as part of the RCS observance of the agency's 30th anniversary. It was founded in 1979 by Janice Scarborough who has served the three decades as executive director. Today's edition of The Guide contains a tabloid insert which reflects the impact of RCS on Asheboro and the Randolph county community as well as 10 other counties of Piedmont North Carolina. The Guide was the first corporate sponsor of the RCS Golf Classic in a partnership which backed the initial tournament in 1993. Since 2000, the Acme-McCrary/Sapona Foundation has maintained corporate sponsorship.
