RCS Golf Classic Has Aspects New and Old By: Addison Penfield March 26, 2009
ASHEBORO—When Regional Consolidated Services (RCS) of Asheboro stages its annual golf fundraiser in May, the nonprofit human services agency and its corporate sponsor, the Acme-McCrary/Sapona Foundation, will celebrate something new and a little something fairly old.
The Add Penfield/RCS Golf Classic which turns 17 years old May 15 will be played against a brand new backdrop and the agency, itself, simultaneously will observe an anniversary of significant age.
For the first time since it was started in 1993, the 18-hole, captain’s choice tournament will be held at the Pinewood Country Club. Also, RCS has been “Helping People Help Themselves” for 30 years in carrying out a mission championed by its founder, Janice Scarborough.
Regional Consolidated Services (nee, Randolph Community Services) was chartered and incorporated April 4, 1979. From a one-program, two person and one-county organization in cramped quarters, the agency has mushroomed into an 11-county, multi-program operation with some 140 employees.
The golf tournament has followed a similar pattern. With notable community support, participation has increased over the years. Initially played in the Fall, it now enjoys a permanent place on the Spring golf calendar hereabouts. It’s been necessary to limit the field to 124 contestants.
Scarborough, the executive director of RCS from the start, sees the golf event as part of an extended anniversary observance. “We naturally are excited about the several ways we are toasting 30 years of community support and involvement, along with the rewarding pursuit of the agency’s goals,” Scarborough said. “The tournament is a valuable instrument in calling attention to some of the things we have accomplished and things we intend to build on.”
Entry blanks for the Classic are available at the RCS main offices, 221 South Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, and at the Pinewood Country Club golf shop. They also may be picked up at golf pro shops elsewhere in the area. The entry fee is $75 per player, $300 for a foursome. Information is obtainable at 336-629-5141. |
