ASHEBORO—Regional Consolidated Services (RCS) of Asheboro again will join the annual observance of “National Weatherization Day” Thursday, October 30, sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy and its Weatherization Assistance Program.

RCS, a private, nonprofit human services agency, has been a participant in the Department’s assistance program for 27 of the 32 years it has been in place throughout the nation. Created by Congress in 1976, it has been credited by the N. C. Governor’s Office and the state’s Office of Economic Opportunity with cooperating with community agencies statewide in effecting energy cost reduction, to the well-being of thousands of North Carolinians, many of them elderly or disabled or in low-income circumstances.

In declaring October 30 Weatherization Day in Asheboro, Mayor David Jarrell urges “All citizens to recognize the Weatherization Assistance Program and the important role played locally by Regional Consolidated Services” in a formal proclamation.

The agency, itself, will celebrate the Day by staging a public demonstration at a residence on Cable Creek Road in Asheboro. Tiffanie Wilson, RCS energy coordinator, says the demonstration will involve the insulation of sidewalls and the attic, along with major sealing activities. Weatherization crew members will be on hand to explain the processes and their effect on energy savings.

RCS consistently has led the state in assisting contract units. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, 371 units were completed in five counties…Randolph, Guilford, Forsyth, Davidson and Rockingham. Since 1981, nearly 2,700 Asheboro homes have been weatherized.

Weatherization under the management of Regional Consolidated Services began in 1981. It was started in Randolph county and expanded into Davidson county in 1992; Rockingham county, 21 years ago; and into Guilford and Forsyth counties eight years ago.

All services are provided without charge.
