Home Energy Conservation Checklist

1. Use the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer for full loads. If dry dishes are not needed immediately, turn the dishwasher off after the wash and rinse cycles and open the door slightly.

2. Clean the dryer filter after every use.

3. Never let the hot water run constantly when washing dishes or hands. Fill the sink with hot water and then add detergent.

4. Use small appliances, such as toaster or grill, when possible to save on use of range.

5. Close the damper when the fireplace is not being used.

6. Save water by taking quick showers or limiting the amount of water in the tub.

7. Cutoff lights when leaving an empty room.

8. Cut off all small electrical equipment such as radio or record player when not in use.

9. In the winter, close all draperies at night. During the daytime, close the draperies on the shady side of the house; open the draperies that let in sunlight.

10. In summer, close draperies at windows that let in morning and afternoon sunlight.

11. Be sure no obstacle, such as furniture, is blocking a heating or cooling outlet.

12. Use flat-bottomed pots and pans that fit the range units and cook on lowest possible heat.

13. Keep the thermostat at the lowest comfortable setting during winter. Lowering the thermostat from 73 to 68 day and night can save up to 20% on fuel. Additional savings can be realized by a further 5 degree thermostat reduction during sleeping hours.

14. In summer, keep the thermostat at the highest comfortable setting. A setting of 78 to 80 degrees or higher is recommended. Approximately 5% is added to cooling costs for each degree the thermostat is set below the 78 to 80 degree range. On cool nights, open windows and turn off the air conditioner.

15. Clean or replace furnace and air conditioner filter once a month when in use.

The National Head Start Association (NHSA) is pleased to announce that Regional Consolidated Services has been selected as a National Head Start Association Outstanding Head Start Grantee for 2006.
